What is Major Depressive Disorder?

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is also known by the following terms; recurrent depressive disorder, clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression and unipolar disorder. This type of disorder is an illness and falls within the category of a mood disorder. The condition is characterized by a global sense of low mood, low self-esteem and a loss of interest or pleasure in usually enjoyable activities. Major depressive disorder is a disabling condition which will usually negatively impact the sufferer’s family, vocational or scholastic life, sleeping and eating habits, and overall physiological well-being and health. A 2005 study determined that approximately 3.4% of people who experience untreated major depressive disorder commit suicide. The same study found that up to 60% of people who commit suicide suffered from depression or other mood disorders.

Complex Definition of Major Depressive Disorder:

Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by a long-lasting depressed mood or affect accompanied often by a marked loss of interest or pleasure in all, or nearly all, usually considered enjoyable activities.

We Effectively Treat Major Depressive Disorder with Clinical Therapy, Diagnostic Assessment and Non-Habit Forming Medications

In the same way diabetes is a disease, major depressive disorder is also a disease. The challenge is that the effects of having this particular illness are not always as easy to see as with other diseases. This often creates a scenario where people undergoing treatment for depression experience some level of denial about the necessity for certain treatment methods. One of the best ways to support people who are exhibiting signs of denial of a problem is to work with them one on one, through individual clinical therapy sessions. This is one area where the Authentic Recovery Center really shines. We offer each person in treatment the benefit of 5 individual therapy sessions each week. In this way, we can often reach people who suffer from major depressive disorder much more rapidly than other traditional drug and alcohol treatment centers.

Another aspect of effectively treating major depressive disorder, aside from individual attention is to have skilled clinicians trained and practiced in the diagnostic procedures relevant to evaluating different types of depression. Diagnostic assessment is a critical ingredient in helping people with major depressive disorder begin to learn how to address their illness and accept methods to treatment. Without precise diagnostic evaluation, there is really no way of knowing whether or not the type of depression a person is suffering from will be responsive to a specific type of therapy or antidepressant medications, as these therapeutic modalities and medications are only suitable for certain types of depression.
